15 Minutes: Meet nursery owner Jody Frimel

What do you do?

I’m the owner of Mill Hollow Nursery, 51595 North Ridge Road. I grow plants, annuals, perennials, fresh culinary herbs, hanging baskets and great big moss baskets. I grow miniature perennials for fairy gardens and miniature gardens. My husband, Bob, helps out.

Are those like bonsai?

No, they’re actually miniature little perennials. Some of them are called stepables where you can lightly tread on them and plant them between rocks and crevices. You can create little miniature landscapes sometimes called fairy gardens — they only grow about 4 to 5 inches tall. There are lots of accessories like sprinkling cans, little urns, fairies, arbors, gates, fences and chairs. I instruct kids to put out bread or treats in the fairy garden and I’ve had little girls call me and tell me they’re gone the next day. They treat it kind of like a doll house and they play in it, move the furniture around and put fairy figures in it.

We’re at the Herb Fest in Mill Hollow, how many herbs are there?


Well, common ones that one can grow in Lorain County.

Oh, gosh, there’s hundreds of herbs. The most popular herb I sell is sweet basil, followed by parsley, true Greek oregano for your pastas and pizzas, chives if you want a slight onion flavor, rosemary is delicious to accompany meat. I also grow a lot of edible flowers that add color to an otherwise all-green garden. Nasturtiums, violets and pansies are edible. I also grow gem marigolds — they are different from regular marigolds in that the foliage is very “ferny” and citrusy smelling. The flowers taste like tangerines or the yellow ones taste like lemons.

What do you do for hobbies?

We like the outdoors. We’re fisherman. We like being on the water, out on the lake. Hiking and camping, too.

Is there anything about herbs you would like to add?

I grow mostly culinary herbs and supply Laurel Run Cooking School and restaurants. I really specialize in the better quality cooking herbs. I co-teach The Cook’s Herb Garden. Marcia DePalma at Laurel Run gives you recipes and we prepare food items in the class and everyone goes home with recipes.
