Suspect says witness encouraged him to flee after striking toddler

LORAIN — The driver accused of running over an 18-month-old boy on Sunday and fleeing the scene told police that one of the boy’s relatives encouraged him to flee.

John Carter told police an uncle of Miguel “Mikey” Romero told Carter to “take off because the police were on their way,” according to police Officer Ricardo Soto’s incident report.

Witnesses said Carter backed down a driveway of Miguel’s home in the 3200 block of Charleston Avenue and ran over Miguel, who was on the sidewalk.

Miguel, whose grandmother said he suffered a light skull fracture, was in stable condition at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital on Tuesday. Soto wrote that the Chevrolet HHR that ran over Miguel had a donut spare on the right rear side that witnesses said ran over Miguel.

Soto wrote that an anonymous phone tip led police Monday to Carter’s home in the 700 block of Lakeside Avenue.

Carter, 37, told Soto said he was visiting one of Miguel’s uncles at the home.

Carter, who has an extensive criminal record, faces charges of aggravated vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident, improper backing and driving with a suspended license.
