Tough Mudder obstacle challenge coming to Lorain County next month

SOUTH AMHERST — Billed as the “the toughest event on the planet,” the Tough Mudder obstacle course will be held in Lorain County in April.

The Tough Mudder events are held worldwide and are designed to test “strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie,” according to the company’s website. It is not a race, but a personal challenge, the website says.

Barb Bickel, executive director of Visit Lorain County, said she met representatives of Tough Mudder at a conference and learned they were looking for a venue in Northern Ohio.

They settled on the Amherst Quarry in South Amherst because it can accommodate the thousands of people expected to participate and the many obstacles, Bickel said.

The course will be 12 miles long and include 24 obstacles, including 12-foot walls, mud, water and even live wires that deliver a shock.

The obstacles have names like “Kiss of Mud: Eat dirt as you crawl on your belly under wires set only eight inches from the ground” and “Boa Constrictor: Crawl through a series of pipes that may force you into freezing, muddy water.”

The event will be April 14 and 15, and the course takes about three hours to complete.

Until March 30, it costs $125 to sign up for either day, according to the event website. Spectator tickets cost $20 in advance online, or $40 at the event.

Almost 10,000 people are signed up for Saturday, the first day of the event, Bickel said. As of Wednesday evening, Saturday was 99 percent sold out and Sunday was 90 percent sold out. Space is limited to 10,000 per day.

Participants will be able to park in the former Ford plant parking lot on Baumhart Road.

Bickel said the event will create a positive economic impact for Lorain County, and people are expected to travel here from outside the state to participate.

“The reason that we pursue events like that is it brings so many people to the area and they spend their money here,” Bickel said.
