3 treated after accident between school bus, pickup truck

ELYRIA TWP. — No students were hurt, but three people sought treatment following an accident between a school bus and a pickup truck this morning.

The crash, about 6:45 a.m., occurred in the area of 6063 Lake Ave., which is just a bit south of state Route 254.

John Blaz, 54, who lives on Lake Avenue just minutes from where the accident occurred had to be removed from his maroon Chevrolet Silverado in a lengthy extrication process that took nearly 45 minutes.

He was bleeding from his head and also had a leg injury, according to trooper David Dylag, who was quick to point out that Blaz was much more concerned about the students on the bus than himself. Dylag added that a woman who lives near the accident comforted Blaz and brought him a towel for his head injury. An spokeswoman at EMH Regional Medical Center said Blaz was in stable condition and expected to be discharged a little later in the morning.

The bus, which had just a few students on board, was headed to Northwood school in Elyria. Both the bus driver and bus aide had complaints of minor injuries, such as wrist pain, according to Dylag.

The bus was northbound and stopped picking up a student when Blaz, who was also northbound, apparently failed to notice the bus in time, Dylag said.

Blaz attempted to swerve but struck the bus before going off the road, Dylag said.

Blaz was alert and talking the whole time, Dylag said. It is initially unclear what hospital he is being taken to.
