Wind takes out light pole at Crushers' stadium

What Crushers executives are calling a "freak accident" took down a large light pole holding 36 lights at the stadium overnight.

The lights came crashing down on an area with picnic tables.

"It just took one gust of wind and it knocked it right down," said Daniel Helm, vice president of business operations for the Crushers.

Helm said officials from the city and county as well as the lighting company and all the businesses that built the stadium will be checking the situation out to make sure it was just a freak accident and lights falling isn't a risk in the future. He added that the Crushers are working with the National Weather Service to determine just how high the wind gusts were.

"We take precautions," he said. "If we have storms like that during the games, we won't have anyone out there."

Helm said he didn't know the cost of the light pole that fell because the lighting was all factored in to the entire cost of the stadium.

"We're lucky no one was here when it happened," Helm said, adding "You never know when Mother Nature can wreak a little havoc."
