North Ridgeville police investigate possible abduction, sexual assault this morning

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Police are investigating a possible kidnapping and sexual assault of an Elyria woman that may have occurred early today in the vicinity of a new housing development off Harbor Drive.

Police Capt. Marti Garrow said the victim is a 43-year-old woman who was semi-conscious when police located her near Harbor and Atlantic drives off of state Route 83 after she made a 911 call about 6 a.m. in which she said she was being harmed and needed help.

Garrow said preliminary evidence, which he did not discuss, indicated the incident was a possible abduction and sexual assault.

“The woman did not say she was being sexually assaulted, just that she was being harmed and needed help,” Garrow said.

When police located the woman, she did not appear to have sustained any serious injuries, cuts or bruises, Garrow said.

Police declined to say whether the woman was clothed when they found her near a van.

“We really can’t go into too much detail about how we found her, due to the sensitivity of the case,” Garrow said.

Police said they have no suspects. The woman told police she did not know the male who accosted her. There were no witnesses, Garrow said.

“No one else called us,’’ Garrow said. "It’s a relatively new area with a few houses."

The woman was transported by the North Ridgeville Fire Department to EMH Elyria Medical Center. She later was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Details on her condition were not immediately known.

“She went to Metro due to the fact there might have been a potential head injury,” Garrow said. “She was going in and out of consciousness.”

The case has been turned over the department’s Detective Bureau for further investigation.
