Malt liquor bottle in grocery bag prompts call to Bomb Squad

AMHERST — The Lorain County bomb squad was called to a shopping plaza in Amherst after a suspicious package was reported in the parking lot at about noon Wednesday.

Lt. Dan Jasinski of Amherst police said someone reported seeing a couple people putting the package on the ground near Damon Nails at 1923 Cooper Foster Park Road. Also, while the people were leaving, one of them made a comment about something blowing up, the caller said.

Police and firefighters cordoned off the area and told people in the plaza to stay away from windows, Jasinski said.

Capt. Dennis Seger of Amherst police saw that the bottle appeared to be alcohol, and he picked it up and poured it out, Jasinski said.

The package turned out to be harmless — it contained a bottle of King Cobra malt liquor, and the call to the bomb squad was canceled.

However, Jasinski said the department is reviewing Seger’s response at the scene.
