Initial autopsy: Head trauma killed Elyria child

ELYRIA — Aaviana Payne was killed by head trauma, according to the Lorain County coroner’s preliminary autopsy finding Tuesday.

An autopsy was performed Monday on the 2½-year-old toddler who died at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday at EMH Medical Center in Elyria.

Listen to the 911 calls:

Aaviana was in full cardiac arrest when LifeCare took her to the hospital from Rosewood Park Apartments. A female 911 caller reported that the toddler had been bleeding from her mouth.

Dr. Stephen Evans, Lorain County coroner, said his office is continuing to investigate when, where and how Aaviana’s injuries occurred. A final autopsy report will be completed in about a week, he said.

The toddler’s leg was in a cast at the time of her death, Evans said previously.

Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said Tuesday he did not have any updates in the investigation into Aaviana’s death.
