BASF building going up

The new lithium-ion manufacturing facility the BASF Corp. is constructing is taking shape in the Elyria skyline.

Ground was broken on the $50 million project, which sits on BASF’s current Pine Street site, in late October, and the building-to-come is already easy to see as it rises in the air behind the plaza that houses Family Video on Broad Street.

Once complete, the facility will be the largest of its kind in North America, and it will put Elyria at the forefront of this industry.

The plant is set to go into production in 2012. The expansion project is partially funded by a $24.6 million federal stimulus grant BASF secured in 2009.

The chemicals in the lithium-ion batteries are expected to be used in hybrid and all-electric cars. Lithium-ion batteries are much more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used to power current gas hybrids.
