UPDATED: Female inmate dies at county jail

LORAIN - A 51-year-old female prisoner at the Lorain County Jail has died.

The woman, whose name is not being identified until her family is notified, died of natural causes, according to Deputy Chief Dennis Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh said the woman, who was arrested on a warrant issued from Franklin County, was found dead this morning. She was OK around 11 p.m. Saturday. Cavanaugh said the woman's husband was arrested with her and has been notified of her death.

It is unclear when an autopsy will be performed. Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans didn't return calls for comment. Cavanaugh, who said he wasn't sure when the woman was arrested, said her name will be released Monday.

Cavanaugh said prisoners are checked regularly, but the checks are staggered so that prisoners can't time them. He said non-violent inmates are kept in dormitories while violent inmates are housed in cells.

Cavanaugh said the last death at the jail was in 2008 and due to natural causes.

"They've got a good medical staff that does a good briefing, a good orientation, when they (inmates) come in," he said. "But that doesn't mean anything with natural causes can't happen."

There were 372 male inmates at the jail Sunday night and 56 women. Last year, the jail booked 7,402 prisoners, according to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office annual report. The average daily population was 391, down from 410 in 2009.
