Teen arrested after knocking down 81-year-old woman over purse

ELYRIA — A teenage boy from Lorain was arrested after knocking down an 81-year-old woman and stealing her purse Thursday morning, Elyria police said.

At about 11:30 a.m. police found the woman at a Washington Avenue apartment complex after a witness called police.

The elderly woman said she was leaving her apartment for the library when the boy stopped her in the hallway, grabbed the purse that was around her neck and shoulder, and ripped it off her, knocking her to the ground.

The woman said she then called for help and walked to the front of the building, where she found another woman who had seen the boy run past.

During their initial search, police had stopped the boy for questioning but let him go. They then found two witnesses who said the boy told them he, his brother and a “crackhead” had robbed a lady.

At about 1 p.m., the witness who initially called police went to the police station and reported that she had seen the boy walk into a building in the area wearing a different coat.

Police said the 17-year-old boy was initially trying to go past officers unnoticed and said he had just gotten out of school at Life Skills Center. Officers noticed his coat matched the description given by the witness and took the boy outside. The witness positively identified the boy based on the unique jeans and tan boots with red shoelaces he was wearing.

The teenager was taken to the station, booked and later released to his mother. The woman, who didn’t request medical attention, didn’t indicate anyone else was involved in the theft. It is unclear whether the woman’s purse was recovered.
