SHEFFIELD TWP. — State Route 254 near Rolling Avenue was reduced to two lanes Thursday afternoon while a county crew worked to repair a water main break.
Sheffield Township trustee David Newsome said the bulge in the pavement and the leaking water was reported around noon.
“Someone called the road department, and they called the county,” Newsome said Thursday evening. “I just drove by there, and there’s still a great big hole.”
No boil advisory was issued as a result of the break. Newsome said he wasn’t sure how much water was lost or whether businesses or homes in the area were affected by the break.
It took the road crew a little while to find the shutoff for the water main before the work to cut and fit a new section of pipe could begin, Newsome said.
The water was gushing from the broken pipe about a foot below road level, Newsome said, adding the crew planned to work through the night in the hopes the break would be repaired by this morning.
The cost of the repairs will be paid by the county since it’s a county water line, Newsome said.
