ELYRIA — A 29-year-old Cleveland man was stabbed overnight, according to a police report.
Officers were called to 163 Bell Ave. about 12:40 a.m., according to the report. They arrived to find a black male bleeding heavily from his left thigh area.
His girlfriend, Melinda Gonzalez, 26, of Elyria was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence, according to the report.
Deren Woods told police Gonzalez, his children's mother, contacted him because she wanted to pick up their children. He said that upon arrival at her residence he began to question her about placing more importance on calling men than on taking care of the children.
Their argument continued in front of the home when Woods took Gonzalez's phone and tried to look through it for men's numbers, the report said.
Woods told officers he was holding the couple's small child and had Gonzalez's cell phone when she attempted to grab the phone and wound up stabbing him.
Woods was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Woods told police he didn't know why Gonzalez would have wanted to hurt him. Gonzalez told officers she was mad Woods had taken her phone.
Officers took pictures of Woods' injuries and the site where the stabbing occurred, which were entered into evidence, the report said. They also recovered a knife and Woods' blood-stained pants.
Gonzalez's three children were picked up by a relative, the report said.
