Sandusky man dies in one-car crash

GROTON TWP. - A Sandusky man died in a one-vehicle crash on state Route 4 south of the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County.

Alcohol is suspected, according to the Sandusky post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The driver, Timothy M. Hiemstra, 24, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado truck and died.

A passenger, Trevor A. Dehn, 24, also of Sandusky, also was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck, but he sustained only minor injuries, according to the patrol. Dehn was treated at Firelands Community Hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

The crash occurred at 3:43 a.m. when Hiemstra drove off the right side of the road, struck a sign and the end of a guardrail, overturned and hit another sign post, according to the Patrol. The truck then rolled down an embankment ejecting the two men.

The crash remains under investigation.
