Blood and platelet donors to get special bandages

Give. This four-letter word is the message that will literally stick with blood and platelet donors at LifeShare Community Blood Services next week.

Through a partnership with Nexcare, the local blood bank will affix special-edition patriotic “GIVE” bandages to blood donors’ arms from Monday through June 20 in honor of World Blood Donor Day and Flag Day on Monday. In Lorain County, LifeShare has locations in Elyria, Lorain, Avon Lake and Wellington.

“What we’re hoping is that people will wear their bandage that day with a degree of pride, and maybe it will be a conversation starter with others to talk about what it is that they do,” said Lisa Mayles, director of public relations and marketing for LifeShare Community Blood Services. “World Blood Donor Day is an international day for regular donors to be recognized for their quiet contributions, but it’s also a day where we want to say, ‘Look, if your neighbor is doing this, this is something that you could be doing too.’ This is a wonderful thing, and we want to recognize all our donors and also inspire other people to do the same.”

Mayles said regionally, LifeShare Community Blood Services needs about 150 people to donate blood every day to keep supplies at safe levels. The need escalates in the summer months because of increased accidents and traumas. At the same time, the supply dips because blood drives at high schools and colleges end, and many people are on vacation and forget to donate.

“We know that blood donation is a very unselfish thing, because where else in society do you see people giving of their time and of themselves for no reward at all? And we know that people who have donated more than a handful of times are doing it because it’s who they are,” Mayles said. “We want them to feel good about it and be able to talk about it.”

Currently, LifeShare is critically low on the following blood types: A-positive, O-negative and AB-negative.
