Judge asks state Supreme Court to let her stay on Sowell case

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland judge under fire by the defense for alleged bias has asked the Ohio Supreme Court to allow her to stay on the trial of a serial killing suspect.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold said Thursday in a 33-page response that the bias claims are without merit.

The state's highest court must decide whether to remove her from the case, as requested by the defense.

Attorneys for 50-year-old Anthony Sowell want another judge to handle his trial in the killings of 11 women whose remains were found around his home.

The judge rejected earlier defense motions to step aside. Sowell's defense claims Saffold made biased comments about the defendant and one of his attorneys.
