Motorists and pedestrians passing by the Elyria Police Department on West Avenue slowed momentarily or glanced over to see the impromptu memorial set up by people wishing to show their sorrow and compassion for slain Elyria Police Officer James A. Kerstetter.
About 10 bouquets of roses, carnations, and other brightly-colored flowers had been left on a waist-high curving brick wall outside the main entrance to the police station as of 11:30 a.m. today. A lone red balloon waved slightly in the breeze as it hovered over the flowers. A photo illustration of Kerstetter was placed among the flowers.
A 15-year veteran of the department, Kerstetter was fatally wounded during a disturbance on 18th Street late Monday night.
