LCCC to host benefit concert for United Way

ELYRIA — You don’t have to tell Gerald “Jerry” Skully, executive director of the United Way of Greater Lorain County, that times are tough.

With a mission statement of assessing, prioritizing and funding human service needs around Lorain County, the benevolent organization also is struggling to meet its goals. That’s why it has scheduled “Give from the Heart — A Benefit Concert for the United Way of Greater Lorain County,” which is scheduled for Feb. 13 at the Stocker Center’s Main Theatre on the Lorain County Community College campus.

“At the Feb. 13 event, Terry Lee Goffee is going to perform his Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute: Train of Love show,” said Skully, who is scheduled to retire in June. “And the opening act is G-Force — The Gendics Family Revue, a wonderful group of kids. What we’re trying to do on that day is have a benefit with the proceeds going to United Way but also something that’s really family oriented and would be a nice sweetheart gift. We’re really appreciative of these performers giving us this benefit.”

There’s more news regarding the fundraising effort.

Running Monday to Feb. 14, WOBL-AM 1320 and WDLW-AM 1380 will be hosting a radio-thon aimed at getting the word out about the United Way in the form of various interviews and more.

“This is the first time we’ve done something like this,” Skully said. “The radio-thon is just a wonderful way to promote what United Way does in the community through the voices of the people that are being served and its volunteers.

“We serve over 70,000 Lorain County (residents) every year. And it’s an opportunity to raise much-needed funds. We’re hoping it brings in $20,000, and we’re hoping with good attendance at the concert we can bring in $10,000. So the goal is really 20-10 for 2010.”

Doug Wilber, owner of WOBL and WDLW, said helping United Way was a no-brainer.

“We’ve been a part of United Way in one way or another for almost 30 years,” Wilber said. “This year is proving to be a particularly tough year for both people who need the services from the agencies United Way helps fund and for raising money. Jerry Skully and I talked about the possibility of doing a radio-thon to help raise additional contributions but also as a way of raising awareness of what the United Way is and what they do.”

Skully is optimistic the United Way will reach its goal with the show as well as provide an entertaining option for the evening.

“Oh, everybody will enjoy this,” Skully said. “I’d encourage families to bring their kids to see them live. Of course, Terry Lee is a well-known country singer around the area and gives a great performance as Johnny Cash. And you can’t help but love these kids, the G-Force girls. They’re just an energetic group. I think anybody who comes will have a great evening, plus it’s a grand Valentine’s Day present. For $20 each, you get to see two fantastic acts. Isn’t that great?”
