Lorain Councilman Flores back, says his cell phone died

LORAIN — Outgoing Lorain Councilman Dennis Flores returned home Sunday after being reported missing.

Flores told The Chronicle-Telegram that he was visiting friends who had come into Lorain County from out of town Friday night. His cell phone had died, so he left it on the charger in his car while he went out to dinner with the friends, then stayed overnight with them. He said he spent Saturday and Saturday night there, too.

Flores was reported missing by family Saturday night after they did not hear from him in 24 hours, according to the report from police.

Flores is reported to have left the home he shares with his mother and sister at 7 p.m. Friday.

He was stunned to come home and face questions from his family, police and the press.

“I got in my car today and saw 20 missed calls on my phone, and wondered, what’s with that?” he said. “But I’m glad of caring people.”

Flores also apologized for causing concern.

Lorain Councilwoman Anne Molnar, who had reported Saturday that Flores was “despondent” over recent threats as well as the end of his term, said she called the Flores home around 7 a.m. Sunday, when Flores’ sister, Mary, told her there was no news. Forty-five minutes later, Mary called back saying her brother had just walked in the door.

“Thank God,” Molnar said. “I’m so very happy.”

Lorain police confirmed Sunday evening that Flores came home but were unable to discuss the circumstances of his disappearance.

“I can imagine why they thought something was wrong,” Flores said of his family and police. “I’ve had my windshield busted out; I’ve been warned to ‘watch out.’ ”

Flores’ term ends with tonight’s City Council meeting. While he’s sad to leave, he said he’s looking at other ways to be involved in the community.

“It’s not the end of the world,” he said. “I’ll refocus and find a new adventure.”
