WELLINGTON — Get out your best cheesecake recipe and enter Wellington Cheese Festival’s Cheesecake Bake-Off set for Saturday because this year, the winners are taking home much bigger prizes.
The prize levels at this year’s Cheesecake Bake-Off have increased significantly thanks to the support of Janice and Larry Querin, according to Mike Eppley, executive director of Main Street Wellington Inc.
“To honor Larry’s late mother, who always participated with multiple entries, the winner of the Jan Querin Memorial Award for ‘Best in Show’ will receive $250, while the most unusual cheesecake will win $50,” Eppley said. “In all four categories, the winners will receive $50, second place will receive $35, and third will receive $20.”
Eppley said he is hopeful the higher prize money attracts new contestants. The festival is this weekend in downtown Wellington.
The entry fee for the cheesecake contest is $10. The four categories are no-bake, plain, flavored, and a category for children 12 and under.
The contest is noon Saturday at the Firehouse Stage next to the Town Hall. A panel of judges rates the cheesecake entries on their flavor, texture and overall appearance.
At 5 p.m. at the Firehouse Stage, the cheesecakes are auctioned to the highest bidders. Cheesecakes are sold at prices from $10 to $30. In fact, most bidders walk away with more than one. One year, the winning bidder at the auction paid almost $200 for the “best of show” cheesecake.
“This is one of the more fun ways we bring money to the Main Street program,” Eppley said.

The festival also includes two Texas Hold’Em Tournaments. Registration begins at 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. Tournaments start 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.
Both tournaments will be at the new location of Wellington’s Fraternal Order of Eagles #2051 at 631 S. Main St. Space is limited to the first 100 players.
Two cornhole tournaments also are scheduled on the lawn in front of the Town Hall. Start time is noon Saturday and
1 p.m. Sunday. The fee to participate is $5. Participants will be able to register on the day of the event at the festival. The winning team receives $25.
Two cheese-eating contests have been scheduled for Sunday — a cheese pizza eating contest for kids at 12:30 pm and a macaroni & cheese eating contest at 4 p.m.
