Avon ballpark gets bigger net

AVON - If drivers along Interstate 90 were worried about stray fly balls from All-Pro Freight Stadium, don't be.

The city has added another 10 feet in height to the netting near the highway to catch foul balls. The net is now 35 feet high and 240 feet long. Avon Mayor Jim Smith said that the chance of a foul ball getting to the highway was remote, but the city wanted to be extra safe.

"We talked to the coach, and according to everyone's stats, a ball should never reach the road," Smith said. "But if someone wanted to do it on purpose, or if they were screwing around, it may be able to."

He said the 10 feet of additional netting is what everyone from the team and city agreed upon would be enough.

"It was very remote that it would ever happen, but we wanted to take the remote out of it," Smith said. "We felt like it was enough, three and a half stories. You have to have a cap somewhere."

Home plate is 290 feet from the interstate. The stadium is home to the Lake Erie Crushers, a new team in the Frontier League.
