Find out who 'Uncle Felix' was

The topic “Who Was Uncle Felix?” will be presented 7 p.m. Monday at the Lorain County Chapter of the Genealogy Society meeting at the Branch Library, 35700 Bainbridge Road.

Robert Jerin, vice president of the Croatian Heritage Museum and Library, will be the featured speaker.

Jerin, who has taken numerous trips as a tour guide to Croatia since 1997, will discuss Central Eastern European research.

One big garage sale

The city’s Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Bureau is holding its eighth annual Garage Sale Days 6 to 8 p.m. June 17 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 18 to 20.

Homeowners taking part will receive a laminated sign, balloons and postings on a master list to be published at Shoppers can also pick up a list of participating addresses at area banks, City Hall, the branch library or the Senior Center beginning in mid-June.

People can sign up for the event 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through June 11 at the Chamber of Commerce office, 34845 Lorain Road.

Celebrate fatherhood

Face painting, volleyball, kayaking, kite-flying and swimming are all part of the fun at the Celebration of Fatherhood from noon to 5 p.m. June 20 at Lorain’s Lakeview Park.

Sponsored by the Healthy Fathering Collaborative of Lorain County, this free day of fun is open to all Lorain County dads and their children.

The program is designed to offer a supportive environment for dads to connect with other fathers, especially those who may be divorced, separated or never married.

The day will also feature a sand castle-building contest, sack and two-legged races, a balloon toss, and bicycle and swimming safety sessions sponsored by the Lorain County Metro Parks.

Door prize drawings will be held every hour, and a free picnic lunch will be served.

The Healthy Fathering Collaborative is a group of 13 agencies whose goals include building and strengthening relationships between fathers and their children, and helping dads in their parenting role.

Beach party kicks off reading program

Preschoolers through fifth-graders can sign up for the “Get Creative” children’s summer reading program at the branch library starting Monday.

At the same time, students in grades six through 12 can register for the “Express Yourself” teen summer reading program.

Kids and teens who read books throughout the summerlong program, which ends Aug. 8, can earn free books and gift cards, attend fun activities, and enter grand prize drawings to win Toys ‘R Us and Best Buy gift cards. Youngsters taking part in the “Get Creative” program can also earn free books and a Borders gift card.

There also will be an adult summer reading program.

The summer reading program is funded by a grant from the Stocker Foundation. Special program sponsors include Lorain County Metro Parks and the North Coast Knights.

A day at the beach

Get in the mood for all that summer reading by attending a free beach party noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Park, 1800 W. Erie Ave., Lorain. The party, co-sponsored by the Lorain Public Library and Lorain County Metro Parks, kicks off a summer of books, music and the arts at the library, and nature at Lakeview Beach as it begins its annual summer season.

The event will feature kid band G-Force Revue, family events and cultural arts performances. Those who complete all activities will receive free tickets to the NorthCoast Knights baseball home opener at 6:05 p.m. Saturday at The Pipe Yard, 2840 Meister Road, Lorain. The NorthCoast Knights is a summer collegiate baseball team made up of professional prospects from across the country.

Schools’ golf outing

Bob-O-Link Golf Course in Avon will host the North Ridgeville City Schools Endowment Funds Golf Outing on June 25.

The 9 a.m. shotgun start event includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, lunch, beverages and a 1 p.m. steak or chicken dinner.

The tourney features a $500 grand prize, plus assorted golf gifts and prizes.

A 2009 Buick Lucerne, provided by Joyce Buick Pontiac GMC in Lorain, will be presented to the winner of the hole-in-one contest.

The event costs $75 per golfer for all activities and meals, or $30 for dinner only.

Coffee with Craig

North Ridgeville City Schools Superintendent Craig Phillips’ “Coffee and Conversation in the Community” meetings will continue in June and July.

The informal discussion groups have no agenda or presentations, and do not require appointments. All sessions are 7:30 to 9 a.m.

Upcoming sessions are set for June 30 at Arabica, 33101 Center Ridge Road, and July 23 at Pioneer Ridge Community Center, 9479 Saw Mill Trace.

More sessions are expected to be scheduled.
