Amherst native is next CW star

Amherst native Brittany Gerena will be the next CW Star in Columbus.

Gerena, a senior at The Ohio State University, will appear in on-air features, write a blog and make appearances on behalf of the Columbus affiliate.

Gerena, 22, will replace current CW Star Jason Perkins on the station, which caters to a young audience with shows such as “Smallville,” “90210,” “Gossip Girl” and “America’s Next Top Model.”

Her job starts in several weeks, but she already has some spots on the air.

“I heard my voice coming from the other room, and it was so weird,” she said.

She will graduate in June, and the station urged her to continue with her studies, saying she could be the station’s spokeswoman at the same time she finishes her degree.

Gerena’s dad, Rick, is skills trade manager at Oberlin College. Her mother, Veronica, died of leukemia when Brittany was 6. Brittany took part in a calendar of the Girls of the Big 10 to raise money for breast cancer research.

Station manager Ellen Daly said the CW Stars become instant celebrities in Columbus.

“We picked Brittany based on her amazing personality — she’s bubbly and smart, and we thought she would connect with viewers,” Daly said.

She beat out nine other finalists for the part-time job, which pays a salary of $20,000 per year.  Station viewers helped decide the contest at www.wwhotv.com.

Station management and judges such as radio DJs also played a part.

Perkins, the current CW star, interviewed a number of CW stars, including model Tyra Banks, whose talk show airs on the network.

Gerena said she’s looking forward to perfecting her interviewing techniques, just in case she gets to do interviews with any of the cast of characters on CW shows. Her favorite show is “Privileged.”
