All Ford workers back on job

AVON LAKE – Sorry, night shift, but it looks like your "vacation" is been cut short.

Workers were being asked to report to the Avon Lake Ford plant at 4:30 p.m. as normal, after a turn table – a large machine that lifts the Econoline vans into the air – broke down Wednesday, giving 1,900 Ford employees a day off. Only 323 maintenance workers had to report to work.

The turn table was repaired early Thursday, but not before day shift workers were told they didn’t have to come to work, UAW Local 2000 President Tim Donovan said.

“We’ll have to make up for lost time. We were down for more than 40 hours,” he said. “Time is money.”

Workers will still get paid for the time they couldn’t build vans. Donovan said the UAW contract includes 40 hours of “short week” time.
