Police: Men jump out of van, rob pair at gunpoint

LORAIN — Two Cleveland residents were held up at gunpoint while trying to turn their vehicle around on a dead-end street about 2 a.m. Friday.

Mark Davis, 20, and Cherie Leonard, 19, told police they were driving in the area of West 19th Street and Reeves Avenue when a light-colored van pulled out in front of them.

Two men, one of whom had a gun, exited the van and approached the car, the couple told police. Davis, who said he grew up in Lorain, recognized one of the men, who entered the vehicle from the rear passenger door and pointed a gun at the two. He then reached up front, put the car in park and removed the keys from the ignition, the report said.

Davis said he became scared, exited the vehicle and ran away. As he fled, he tripped and fell over the curb to the ground. After Davis fell, the two men began kicking and punching him, the report said. The man whom Davis recognized also struck him in the back of the head with the gun, the report said.

The two men allegedly took a gold chain and $7,800 in cash from Davis before he got up and took off running towards a nearby apartment complex.

Leonard stated that after Davis ran, the men returned the keys to her, got back in their van and left the scene.

Davis at the time was unable to show any bruising or markings from the incident except a small scratch on his left thumb. His clothing was clean and had no rips, police said.
