EPWORTH, Ohio (AP) — An off-duty Mansfield city police officer was one of two dead and his older brother was in custody following a shooting early Wednesday in rural Richland County in central Ohio, authorities said.
Brian Evans, 37, a 14-year veteran of the Mansfield police force, was found dead after 1 a.m. by officers responding to a call of a disturbance and shots fired at a home in Weller Township, northeast of Mansfield, according to a joint statement from the police department and the county sheriff's office.
The identity of the other person who was killed was being withheld until the family had been notified.
Larry Evans, 39, the brother of Brian Evans, was being held as a suspect at the sheriff's office, the statement said. It did not say whether charges had been filed, and it was unclear whether Larry Evans had an attorney.
Sheriff J. Steve Sheldon's office said no other information would be released until a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Two other people were shot and wounded, authorities said. One was released from MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield after treatment, and the other was admitted to the hospital. That person's condition was not immediately known.
