Woman killed in Route 57 crash

ELYRIA — A 65-year-old woman is dead following a Sunday night crash on state Route 57.

The woman, whose name was not released, was apparently heading south in the northbound lane just north of Cleveland Street when she struck a Chevrolet Trailblazer head-on shortly after 10 p.m.

Two male occupants in the Trailblazer were taken to EMH Regional Medical Center by ambulance, Elyria fire Capt. Joseph Pronesti. Their conditions were not known.

Brian Arndt, 23, was traveling behind the Trailblazer on his way home not far from the crash site when he witnessed the collision.

“(The woman) was obviously traveling the wrong way and hit the Blazer so that the back end came off the road. I had to slam down on my brakes so I wouldn’t hit it,” he said.

The two men in the Trailblazer appeared injured but were able to move, he said.

“The passenger’s face was all cut up, and there was blood everywhere, and I think the other guy’s leg was broken,” he said.

Police spent much of the night removing the woman’s destroyed Honda Civic from the median. The car’s hood was smashed in and the broken windshield barely held onto the bent frame where it was once sealed. Mirrors, lights, glass and metal lay strewn all over the grass and road.
