Hang on to your hats: High winds expected

ELYRIA — Will it be a white Christmas? There’s a 50-50 chance.

But what’s more certain is that harsh weather is heading this way before Christmas Eve — which means Rudolph’s nose will have to burn extra bright this year.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for today and is predicting heavy lake-effect snow will pummel the shoreline.

Winds of 35 to 40 mph will sweep through the area today and will gust up to 60 mph overnight.

Anything exceeding 58 mph is enough to damage power lines, trees and houses, according to the weather service.

The warning will be in effect until 3 a.m.

Most areas will get at least a dusting of snow this evening, and the gales will cause severe drifting, the weather service is warning.

Significant snowfall could come early Monday and into Tuesday morning, causing hazardous driving conditions.

Temperatures on Christmas Day should peak above freezing and by Wednesday could get up to 40 degrees.
