Lorain indicted in slaying of ex's lover

ELYRIA — A Lorain man was indicted by a county grand jury Thursday on aggravated murder and other charges stemming from the shooting death of his estranged wife’s boyfriend.

Frank Honaker, 45, is accused of shooting 37-year-old Christopher Betts, of Columbia Township, outside the rear entrance of Lakeshore Colonial Apartments last Thursday. Betts was found clinging to life, dying less than an hour later from a gunshot wound to his lower chest and abdomen at Community Regional Medical Center.

Police have said Honaker was driving around with his 15-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son when their daughter called her mother, Lisa Honaker, and asked if they could stop by. Lisa Honaker asked Betts to go out the back of the apartment to avoid a confrontation with her husband.

As his children went to the front door, Frank Honaker allegedly went around back and shot Betts, then walked away. He allegedly told Lisa Honaker, “There, how do you like that?” as he left the scene, police said.

He surrendered at the county jail later that evening, and has admitted to shooting Betts, according to police.

If convicted of the aggravated murder, murder and felonious assault charges he faces, Frank Honaker could face life in prison.

Honaker had been expected to appear in Lorain Municipal Court on Thursday afternoon for a preliminary hearing on the charges filed against him last Friday by Lorain police. But those charges were dropped after he was indicted, said his attorney, Shimane Smith.
