Elyria officer avoids being hit by Jeep at crash scene

ELYRIA —An Elyria police officer was almost pinned between his cruiser and another car Sunday following a series of crashes.

The first crash occurred as Officer Christopher Constantino was sitting in his cruiser while investigating a crash around 11 p.m. on state Route 57 when a vehicle ran into his cruiser from behind, according to the police report.

Constantino didn’t observe any damage to his cruiser and advised the driver to pull off the roadway so that he could complete his initial investigation.

Upon resuming his investigation, Constantino tried to brush snow away from the license plate of another vehicle and, as he was standing between his cruiser and the rear of the first vehicle, a red Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed rammed into the rear of his cruiser, the report said. The Jeep collided with so much force that Constantino had to jump up onto the hood of his vehicle to avoid being pinned.

He sustained injures to his right leg, knee and back, but was able to contact another police unit to assist him.

Constantino declined to be taken to the hospital for treatment. No one else was injured, and the reports on the accidents themselves were unavailable Monday to learn if anyone was charged.
