ELYRIA - The busiest mailing day of the year is more than two weeks away, but post offices are already preparing.
The Elyria and Lorain post offices will be open until 3 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 15.
The Elyria office will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 9 and Dec. 16, as well.
The Elyria post office is at 345 E. Bridge St., and the Lorain post office is at 439 W. Fourth St.
To accommodate the holiday rush, some locations are extending their hours. But that doesn`t mean the United States Postal Service won`t take time to make sure Santa gets all of his mail.
With the holiday season nearing, it`s not uncommon for post offices to receive letters from children addressed to the North Pole. Post offices in Northeast Ohio receive thousands of Santa letters each year, said Dave Van Allen, spokesman for the USPS.
And they do not go unnoticed. As long as the letters include a self-addressed stamped envelope, Santa will write back to the children.
Some letters ask for the latest toy. The heartbreaking ones, Van Allen said, are the pleas to Santa asking him to help a parent to find work or a cure for an illness.
To get their letters and packages out before the holidays, Van Allen recommends considering options that will eliminate time waiting at the post office, such as using the automated postal centers or online service.
But if going to the post office is inevitable, Van Allen suggests avoiding aopening or closing times and lunchtime, as those are the busiest times of day.
