Inmate who escaped from AA meeting caught

ELYRIA - The woman who walked out of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Sunday while serving time at the Lorain/Medina Community Based Correctional Facility was arrested by Elyria police Tuesday morning.

Sherri Baker, 30, of Elyria, was picked up on an outstanding warrant about 5 a.m. after an Elyria police officer recognized her as she walked away from a taxi cab along East Avenue.

Baker had been serving time on drug and drug paraphernalia possession charges at the facility when she was permitted to attend an AA meeting at another facility on Lowell Street.

During the meeting, she asked to use the bathroom and never returned.

She was arrested without incident and transported back to the Lorain/Medina Community Based Correctional Facility.

Walking away from custody in a nonsecure setting such as an AA meeting is still considered escape, sheriff`s Capt. Richard Resendez said.

The charge can range from a first-degree misdemeanor to a low-level felony based on the circumstances of the escape and the severity of the original crime and/or sentence.

The apparent walkaway by Baker is the third time a Community Based Correctional Facility prisoner has escaped in recent months.
