County OKs contract with maintenance workers

ELYRIA - The county commissioners Tuesday agreed to a new contract with about 40 employees represented by the United Steelworkers Union.

The three-year contract will give the employees, most of whom do maintenance and custodial work and operate directly under the commissioners, a 4 percent raise for 2007, followed by a 2.5 percent raises for 2008 and 2009.

Employees will also have to pay about $104 per month toward their health insurance. They used to pay only $35 per month.

"We needed to start having employees pay for health care," said Commissioner Lori Kokoski. "Costs are just getting out of control."

Contract negotiations had been going on for about a year.
