Wellington, get on your bikes and ride!

Village is a stop on statewide cycling tour this summer

WELLINGTON - The roads around Wellington will resemble rivers of bicycles when an estimated 3,000 people descend on the Lorain County Fairgrounds for the 20th annual Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure in June.

The cyclists arrive June 14, camp overnight and start cycling an average of 50 miles per day on the tour, which traverses the northern half of Ohio.

While in Wellington, participants will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest bike parade, and local residents are invited to take part, said Julie Van Winkle, director of GOBA. The current record is 1,901, she said.

An estimated 1,200 vehicles and a limited number of campers will be parked at the fairgrounds. Tour participants return to the fairgrounds on June 21.

"We asked riders what really attracts them, and they said they like going on a bike tour for a week that is all planned out for them with the whole support network we have for them," Van Winkle said.

Even babies and children take part in bike trailers nicknamed "buggers," Van Winkle said.

Part of the registration fee goes toward hiring four tractor-trailers to carry their camping gear, and several ambulances will follow the bicyclists to tend to any injuries and emergencies.

There will likely be lots of exploring, and the Lorain County Visitor`s Bureau is thrilled, said Lynne Lisner, marketing and

communications manager.

"This is going to be so awesome," Lisner said. "They`re expecting 3,000 riders – imagine that in Wellington."

Early registration by April 30 costs $170 and the cost is $190 from May 1 to May 14. Registration for children ages 6 to 15 is $85 and those 5 and younger can take part for free. Registration does not cover the cost of food.

GOBA works with businesses and non-profits in towns along the way and people buy their own food. Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, a non-profit agency, sponsors the tour.
