NAACP president wants residency looked into

LORAIN - The president of the local NAACP is questioning why a recently elected Lorain school board member has a home in Sheffield Lake.

Jean Wrice said she became aware of board member-elect Paul Biber`s living situation about two weeks before the election, but one of her staff members was unsuccessful at reaching anyone at the Board of Elections. She said she wants the situation looked into.

"I just got a problem with that," she said. "It really bothers me that so many educators don`t live in the city, so I especially don`t agree if someone who makes decisions doesn`t live in our city."

Ohio law also requires school board candidates be registered voters in the district.

Although Biber said he does have a home in Sheffield Lake, where his wife and two children currently live, he moved to an East 35th Street rented home in Lorain in August so he could run for a seat on the Lorain school board. He also changed his voter registration to reflect the move.

Biber taught in the Lorain school district for 36 years before retiring last June and also has sent both of his children to Lorain Schools through open enrollment. He plans on moving his wife and children to Lorain as soon as he finds a permanent residence.

Last month, Board of Elections Director Jose Candelario said he received a letter questioning Biber`s place of residence, but Biber provided documentation to prove he lived at the address he`d listed when he filed to run for office.

Candelario did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.
