Contractors sue church for bad faith

ELYRIA - Two construction companies are suing an Elyria church, saying the church failed to follow through on a contract to have them build a new facility on Lake Avenue.

According to the lawsuit, filed Thursday in county Common Pleas Court, the Elyria Church of Christ, now known as the Lake Avenue Church of Christ, hired Cuyahoga Falls-based Craven Corp. and Rivertree Stewardship Services Ltd. out of Louisville, Ohio, to build its new church in 2004.

The two companies say that despite having several meetings and doing other work on the project, the church hired another contractor to do the work in July 2005.

The project was supposed to cost more than $1.4 million, and the two companies were supposed to be paid 10 percent of that cost to oversee construction, the lawsuit said

The new church opened earlier this year, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit accuses the church of fraud, bad faith, negligence and breach of contract and asks for more than $100,000 in damages.

An attorney for the two companies declined to comment. Church leaders could not be reached for comment Thursday.
