Man flubs bank robbery, carjacks Navy sailor's car

LORAIN - A man in a red stocking mask hijacked a Navy sailor`s car after failing to rob a bank Tuesday.

Sailor Lou Crone, 24, of Lorain, who just recently returned from service in Kuwait, found himself in a dangerous situation on American soil when he pulled over on Kansas Avenue to search for his cell phone charger.

He was rifling through his car in the parking lot of El Kefon Grand Buffet when a man in a red stocking mask rushed out of Lorain National Bank across the street.

"He put the gun in my face and told me he would (expletive) kill me if I didn`t (expletive) get out of his way - his words, not mine," Crone said.

When Crone stepped aside, the man jumped in Crone`s 1991 Ford Taurus and sped away, he said.

Lorain police Lt. James McCann described the carjacker 20 to 30 years old, wearing a short camouflage coat and black Nike warm-up pants with white stripes.

The robber had a handgun and had tried to go into the bank to rob it after it closed, but a locked interior door blocked his way, McCann said.

No suspects had been arrested in connection to the incident late Tuesday.
