OBERLIN - A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot in the back late Saturday night and police are seeking a 15-year-old suspect believed to have been involved, according to a police press release.
The injured teen, Matthew Jones of Groveland Street, was taken to Allen Community Hospital by his mother following the shooting. Police believe Jones was injured about 11:50 p.m. in the area of the Martin Luther King Park on South Pleasant and East Vine streets.
At that time, officers reported hearing shots in the area as well as received several calls from residents who also heard the shots and told police a red van seen leaving the area may have been involved, the release said.
Police arrived just in time to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle. A small caliber pistol was recovered, but a 15-year-old suspect from Elyria fled the area with other teens on foot.
During that time, Jones was being flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. Information about his condition was not available Sunday night as hospital staff said he was not listed in the hospital patient log.
The shooting was in the same area police responded to at 11:07 p.m. after also hearing gunshots and receiving calls. At that time, two 16-year-old Oberlin teens were taken into custody for disorderly conduct and underage consumption of alcohol.
About two hours later, an employee of Downtown Pizza on South Main Street called police to report a small-caliber bullet hole in the wall of the pizzeria.
Police believe that it may be related to the incident, however, it has yet to be confirmed.
The shooting remains under investigation.
