Car, transit bus collide in Lorain

LORAIN — A crash between a Lorain County Transit bus and a car on Grove Avenue sent 13 people to area hospitals Friday.

Workers move debris away from the car involved in a crash with a Lorain County Transit bus in Lorain.

At least one of those in the car was listed in critical condition Friday night at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Eleven passengers from the bus were treated for minor injuries and released from CHP Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

Lorain police Officer Ricardo Soto said the crash happened at 12:49 p.m. when a Buick Century carrying two people appeared to have run a red light where the road intersects with East 31st Street.

Soto said the bus hit the car on its side, sending both vehicles into a utility pole on the northwest side of the intersection.

The driver and passenger of the car — whose names were not being released — had to be pried loose from the smashed vehicle.

Assistant Fire Chief Roy Cochran said the crash knocked out power to nearby homes and businesses, as well as to the area’s traffic signals.

The crash happened directly in front of a fire station, so firefighters were on the scene almost immediately.

Mario Martinez, who lives two doors down from the station, heard the crash and went to help.

“The woman (passenger) caught the brunt of the crash. I thought she was dead — she had blood on her face — but she started moving after about 20 minutes,” he said.

Pamela Novak, interim director of Lorain County Transit, said two riders were taken from the bus on stretchers.

The bus driver, whom Novak and police did not identify Friday, was shaken and had a cut on her hand, she said.

Soto said the bus driver most likely won’t face charges. The driver of the Buick probably will, he said, although what those might be hadn’t been determined Friday.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, and Soto said the man and woman in the Buick were wearing seat belts.
