Officer uses Taser to ward off dog

LORAIN — Police used a Taser gun on a mixed-breed pit bull about 4:36 p.m. Tuesday after the dog attacked an officer, according to a Lorain police report.

Officer Craig Payne said he received a report that the dog was running loose on Camden Avenue. When he arrived on the scene, the dog charged him and bit his leg, the report said.

He kicked the dog free and the pit bull charged him again. This time, Payne shot the animal with his stun gun, according to his report.

The dog was captured by the city dog warden and was being held at the county dog pound.

Its owner, Julie Barone, 82, of Lorain, was cited for confinement of dangerous and vicious dogs, annual registration and rabies immunization.

Payne went to CHP Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Grafton man wrecks car on Island Road

EATON TWP. — A Grafton man was hospitalized after gradually straying from the roadway about 8:47 p.m. Wednesday and rolling his car into a ditch, State Highway Patrol Trooper Charles Jackson said.

Jeffrey Willis, 28, of Grafton, will face charges of failure to control and drug paraphernalia and possibly others depending on toxicology test results, Jackson said.

Willis was on Island Road when his vehicle drifted off the left side of the road and struck a mailbox, went into a parking lot and struck a sign for Bailey’s Pizza House near state Route 82, Jackson said.

“The marks show it happened very gradually,” he said. “We don’t think that alcohol was involved, but it’s too early to tell. Drugs may have played a role.”

In the car, officers found several syringes and a pipe, he said.

A witness called 911 and Willis was taken by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Jackson said.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital said he was in critical condition.

Woman allegedly stabs husband

LORAIN — Mary Zahner, 24, of Lorain, was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence after allegedly stabbing her husband in the foot Tuesday, according to a Lorain police report.

Ricardo Zahner, 28, said his wife believed he had been with other women. About 11:03 p.m., she yelled at him to leave the house and tried to push him outside, the report said.

During a brief struggle at the door, she tried to stab him in the arm and then pushed the knife through his shoe, the report said.

“I’m really sorry for stabbing him, but he left me home all alone today with nothing to eat,” she told police.
Mary Zahner was taken to the county jail.
