Teen accused of shooting parents made gun threat at school four years ago

The 16-year-old boy accused of murdering his mother and shooting his father had been in trouble at Wellington's McCormick Middle School four years ago after threatening to bring a gun to school, though the boy passed the threat off as a joke relating to a church play he was in, according to a Wellington police report.

Daniel Petric was a student at McCormick Middle School on Oct. 16, 2003, when police were called to the school after four other students said they heard Daniel say he was going to bring a gun to the school, the report said.

Upon being questioned by police, Daniel said that he was only joking with another student and explained that it related to "a church play he was in at his father's church and they used unloaded guns to rob the church and minister," the report said.

The report said another student asked Daniel if he was going to bring a gun to school, and Daniel said yes and started acting depressed to get attention. Daniel was removed from the school that day, but in the police report the officer said that he felt "no intent was meant by Daniel to bring a gun to school but to try to get attention from the students since Daniel is new to the school."
