Man, hit by train Saturday, still critical

ELYRIA — An Elyria man, who was struck by a train on the tracks near Infirmary Road on Saturday, was walking along the tracks when he was hit, Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said.

The conductor of the Norfolk Southern train that struck 34-year-old Andre McGee, told police he saw McGee attempt to jump out of the way of the train before being hit, Eichenlaub said.

McGee may have been walking along the tracks toward his home on nearby Brace Avenue, Eichenlaub said, but police don’t know for sure because they have not been able to interview him while he receives treatment at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

The conductor called police at 2:25 a.m. Saturday after finding McGee under the train a short distance from the Infirmary and West River Road crossing where he was hit.

McGee was listed in critical condition Tuesday at MetroHealth, according to a hospital spokeswoman. He suffered severe trauma, including fractures to his arm and left leg, according to medical personnel at the scene.
