Three women hurt in two-car crash on Cleveland St.

ELYRIA — Two helicopters were used to transport two women to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland Friday after a two-car crash at Cleveland Street and state Route 57.

One passenger, Marguerite Purdue, 49, no residence listed, was listed in critical condition at MetroHealth, according to a nursing supervisor.

The car’s driver, Dorothy Pujalte, 79, of Elyria, was not listed as a patient at MetroHealth on Friday night.

Pujalte’s 1998 Dodge Intrepid was westbound on Cleveland Street when it was struck on the front passenger side by a 1991 Buick Park Avenue driven southbound on state Route 57 by Jacyln Schmidtz of Lorain, according to police.
Schmidtz, 18, was treated and released Friday night at EMH Regional Medical Center.

Neither car stopped at the intersection, and police are interviewing witnesses to determine if either driver ran a red light, Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub said.

The crash, which happened shortly after noon, caused traffic jams on both Cleveland Street and state Route 57 as the lunchtime traffic tried to navigate around the wreckage, rescue workers and police investigators.
