Police find burglary suspect

Domestic dispute over alleged stolen items leads cops

ELYRIA —Police believe they found a burglary suspect Thursday after his girlfriend attempted to kick him and his allegedly stolen goods out of her home.

Following a domestic violence call on Ninth Street in Elyria on Thursday, officers from the North Ridgeville police department went to the home to retrieve items suspected taken during a burglary on Center Ridge Road.

Joseph Chavez of Elyria was charged with domestic violence by Elyria police after he fought to stay in the home of his girlfriend along the 400 block of Ninth Street in Elyria.

The incident started when the home’s landlord walked in on Chavez as he was sorting through a large amount of jewelry — prompting her to tell her longtime tenant and friend to make him leave, police said.

Police were called to the home after a fight ensued, and they said they found many items taken during a burglary Wednesday at a home in the 36900 block of Center Ridge Road in North Ridgeville.

The home, which belongs to a daughter of North Ridgeville home builder Frank Dettore, had been entered through an unlocked rear door, and thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and other items were taken, according to North Ridgeville police.

North Ridgeville police are still investigating the matter and waiting for a detailed list of stolen items from the family.

A member of the Dettore family arrived at the Elyria home and verified for police that a number of the items on hand belonged to her. She declined to comment afterward.
