Couple's land in Vermilion Twp. zoned for winery

VERMILION TWP. — The yet-to-open Paper Moon Vineyard on state Route 60 received the zoning approval Richard and Sheryl Cawrse, of Huron, needed to turn more than 50 acres of vacant land into the area’s newest winery.

Last week, the Vermilion Township trustees voted to allow the land to be rezoned from agricultural to commercial, making way for the business. The Cawrses bought the land, located west of Vermilion High School, last year after the sale of the family-owned business Clovervale Farms.

However, they soon realized in order to bring their dream to fruition, a large majority of the property needed to be rezoned. The front of the property, which is adjacent to a gas station, already was commercial, but the rear was agricultural. The Cawrses have not set a firm date on when the winery will open.

However, they said they are pushing for spring 2008, when the business would open on a limited basis. Once up to full operation, the winery would offer wine-making opportunities for all would-be vintners.
