Man hits officer, then hides in sheets

ELYRIA — A 39-year-old Elyria man was found cowering under a sheet in a closet of a Wilkes Villa apartment Saturday after allegedly punching a police officer who was trying to arrest him, according to a police report.

Michael A. James, of West 16th Street, was charged with assault on a police officer, burglary, obstructing official business, resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant from Cuyahoga County.

James was spotted behind the Original Church of God at about 4:30 p.m. by Patrolman Michael Groomes, the report stated.

The officer told James he had a warrant, and James tried to run, according to the report.

Groomes tried to grab James, who punched Groomes in the left temple, causing an abrasion, the report stated.

The officer grabbed James’ shirt and James landed multiple punches to the officer’s head, according to the report.

James tore off the officer’s badge and fled toward the Wilkes Villa housing complex, the report stated.

The door to 121 Portia Court slammed shut as officers approached and officers knocked on the door, but no one answered.

The doors were locked and a resident of the complex approached with keys and told police the occupants were gone and had asked the resident to watch their apartment.

Officers used the keys to open the apartment and found James in a fetal position under a sheet in a bedroom of the residence, the report stated.

The officer who reported being punched said he was light-headed and had a headache and stiff neck after the exchange.
