Man charged with looting hotel vending machine

ELYRIA — An Elyria man staying at the Red Roof Inn was charged with theft and tampering with coin machines after allegedly breaking into a vending machine and stealing cookies and crackers, according to police.

Sean Bruce, 29, of Lake Avenue, was arrested after an unknown man at a nearby Wendy’s yelled that someone had broken into the vending machine of the Griswold Road motel and ran into room 116, according to a police report.

When police questioned Bruce, he said he was alone, although the officer saw someone in one of the beds, the report stated.

The 19-year-old woman in the bed woke up and told police that Bruce came running back to the room carrying the snacks and he unsuccessfully attempted to persuade her to get some, too.

Phone line problems plague Patrol

ELYRIA — The Elyria post of the Ohio Highway Patrol lost most of its phone service and computer network for about two hours Sunday afternoon, a dispatcher said.

Emergency calls from 911 still came to the Patrol, but the only phone that was working was a Lorain line, said dispatcher Jennifer Hovinetz.

She said the problem was attributed to an inoperableT-1 line. Service was restored about 6 p.m., and personnel continued to work on the faulty line throughout the night, she said.
