Off the beats: Mammoth tomatoes fit man's purposes to a 'T'

Chuck Hall likes BLT sandwiches.Crisp bacon, lettuce and juicy tomatoes all stacked between two pieces of toast make for good eating. Well, this 61-year-old Elyria man is getting ready to put one heck of a “T” in his BLT. Thursday afternoon, his wife went tomato picking in her sister’s backyard garden on Indian Hollow Road and walked away with two huge tomatoes.

“It looks like three tomatoes just mutated together into one,” Hall of West Avenue said. “I think it looks like a baby’s butt the way it’s all curled around.”

Chuck Hall, of Elyria, is gearing up to slice a massive “T” for his favorite sandwich, a BLT.

One tomato is about 6 inches wide, 41/2 inches in diameter and weighs about four pounds, Hall said. However, it won’t stay that way for long, as it is just ripe enough to eat.

“It’s almost as big as my sister-in-law’s dog’s head,” Hall added while standing next to Chewbacca, a full-grown toy poodle. “It will make massive BLTs.”

Mayor, you make your governor proud
It’s always nice to get praise from the higher-ups, especially when it comes from the governor.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland went out of his way to pay a compliment to Sheffield Lake Mayor John Piskura at Sunday’s Labor Day celebration in Lorain, saying the city is progressing rapidly and the mayor is doing a wonderful job.

“It’s important to have strong and effective leaders like Mayor Piskura,” Strickland told the crowd.

Gov. Ted Strickland commended Sheffield Lake Mayor John Piskura for his work during Sunday’s Labor Day festivities in Lorain.

In an e-mail the city sends out to residents, Piskura mentioned the compliment and told residents they should feel good about where they live.

“I want everyone to know how proud they should be that Sheffield Lake is being recognized outside our borders,” Piskura wrote. “Sheffield Lake is absolutely making significant progress which is becoming a model for other communities.”
