Power outage affects thousands

Even though it was pretty darn hot Tuesday, Ohio Edison officials say faulty wiring — not an overload of air conditioners — was to blame for an outage that left 29,000 homes and buildings without power

The outage affected parts of Elyria, Lorain, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Columbia Station and North Olmsted, according to Ohio Edison spokesman Mark Durbin. Power was lost about 2:20 p.m. and was nearly fully restored by 5 p.m

“It was a fairly major substation, and it fed into other substations,” Durbin said

The outage led Lorain County Community College to cancel all of its evening classes, according to the college’s Web site, And busy places like the Elyria post office were dark as well during the afternoon

Ohio Edison crews got the power back on by rerouting circuits. They’ll be working to repair the substation this week, Durbin said.
