End-of-summer blast for city kids

ELYRIA — Kids can have fun and get free school supplies at the Elyria Summer Blast this weekend.

Elyria students ages 14 to 18 should arrive between 3 and 7 p.m. Friday at South Rec, located at 16th Street and East Avenue. The older kids will have a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, basketball hot shot, volleyball and double Dutch jump rope competitions.Children 13 and younger are invited to attend their own blast 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be clinics for football, soccer and cheerleading, and the Elyria Pioneer Marching Band Drum Line will perform at 2 p.m.

One of the big attractions both days will be “Dance Dance Revolution,” a video game with more than 1,000 songs that’s played on a dance pad with four panels. The panels are pressed with  players’ feet.

“It can go at various speeds, and kids have a blast with it,” said Heidi Rock, school improvement coordinator.

Any student who registers will get a bracelet and free admittance to the pool.

About 500 children attended the event last year.

“It’s a huge party atmosphere,” Rock said.
There will be free food, games and age-appropriate school supplies.

The Elyria schools and the city are still accepting donations of school supplies for the event, and donations are down this year, according to Rock.

Tax deductible donations can be dropped off at the Elyria Administrative Center in the old Elyria West building, 42101 Griswold Road, or at the Elyria Parks and Recreation office at City Hall, 131 Court St.

Sponsors include the city and schools, the Elyria schools, the Elyria YWCA and the Boys and Girls Club of Lorain County.
